JEE Main 2026: NTA Clarifies — Use of Calculator ‘Not Allowed’; Cites ‘Typographical Error’ in Information Bulletin

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has issued a clarification regarding the use of calculators in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2026, stating that candidates will not be allowed to use any calculator—virtual or physical—during the exam.
This clarification comes after confusion arose among aspirants when the JEE Main 2026 Information Bulletin mentioned that a “virtual calculator” would be available for candidates during the exam. The NTA has now termed this mention as a “typographical error”, confirming that the exam rules remain unchanged from previous years.
🔹 What NTA Said
In its official statement, the NTA clarified:
“The reference to a ‘virtual calculator’ in the JEE Main 2026 Information Bulletin was an inadvertent typographical error. Candidates are hereby informed that calculators—virtual or otherwise—are not permitted in the examination.”
The agency further emphasized that JEE Main 2026 will follow the same examination pattern as before, and candidates must rely solely on their mathematical skills, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving ability without the aid of any electronic device.
🔹 Background: Confusion Among Aspirants
After the release of the JEE Main 2026 bulletin, thousands of students took to social media expressing surprise and confusion over the new “virtual calculator” feature, similar to that used in JEE Advanced. Many believed it was a new policy by NTA to align both exams under a common digital testing framework.
However, the NTA’s latest clarification puts an end to the speculation, confirming that only JEE Advanced allows the use of a virtual scientific calculator on screen, whereas JEE Main continues to prohibit all forms of calculators, log tables, or mathematical tables.
🔹 Key Examination Guidelines (As per NTA)

🔹 Expert Reaction
Our Education experts Vikas Sir welcomed the clarification, stating that JEE Main’s focus on mental calculation and conceptual accuracy aligns with its objective of testing core problem-solving skills.
“Allowing calculators could have diluted the essence of JEE Main, which is to evaluate logical thinking and time management,” said an academic mentor from Delhi.
🔹 What Aspirants Should Do
Students are advised to:
Rely on manual and mental calculation practice during preparation.
Avoid assumptions based on unverified online claims.
Regularly check the official NTA website — jeemain.nta.ac.in for updates and corrigenda.
With this clarification, NTA aims to eliminate all ambiguity before the start of the exam registration process for JEE Main 2026 Session 1, which is expected to begin soon.
