BIT Mesra May Shift From Home State Quota To 100% All India Quota Through JoSAA/CSAB

BIT Mesra may implement 100% All India Quota (AIQ) admissions through JoSAA/CSAB from 2026-27, replacing the Home State quota for Jharkhand students.
In a major development for engineering aspirants across India, Birla Institute of Technology Mesra has approved a proposal to conduct admissions for all seats at the Mesra campus under the 100% All India Quota (AIQ) from academic session 2026-27 onwards.
According to the Academic Council document, this change comes after the lapse of the MoU with the Government of Jharkhand, under which nearly 50% seats were allocated to Jharkhand domicile students through Home State quota.
What Changes?
Previously:
- Around 50% seats at BIT Mesra were available for Jharkhand students under Home State quota.
- Admissions were conducted through JoSAA/CSAB along with institute counselling for some categories.
Now Proposed:
- Admissions to all seats at the Mesra campus will be conducted under 100% All India Quota.
- Seat allocation will primarily happen through JoSAA/CSAB counselling.
Impact on Students
For Jharkhand Students
- Competition may increase significantly, especially in branches like CSE, AI & ECE.
- Home State rank advantage could end from 2026 onwards.
- Students may now compete directly with candidates from all over India.
For Non-Jharkhand Students
- More seats may become available under AIQ.
- Closing ranks may slightly expand in some branches due to increased AIQ participation.
Why This Matters
BIT Mesra is one of the top private engineering institutes participating in JoSAA counselling. The institute has historically offered separate opening and closing ranks for Home State and Other State candidates.
This proposed shift can completely change:
- JoSAA counselling dynamics
- Expected cutoff trends
- Admission strategy for JEE Main aspirants in 2026
Important Note
The proposal has been shown as “Approved” in the Academic Council minutes shared on the institute website. Students are advised to wait for the official admission brochure and JoSAA business rules for final implementation details.
