484 MBBS Seats Remain Vacant in Maharashtra; Delay in Adding NMC-Approved Seats Raises Fairness Concerns

    MBBS

In a concerning development, as many as 484 MBBS seats remain vacant across medical colleges in Maharashtra, even after the conclusion of the regular counselling rounds for NEET UG 2025. The delay in incorporating newly approved seats by the National Medical Commission (NMC) into the state counselling process has led to widespread discontent among aspirants.

According to sources, these seats were approved by the NMC after the initiation of the state’s Round 3 (R3) counselling conducted by the State Common Entrance Test Cell (CET Cell), Maharashtra. As a result, these additional seats were not included in the official seat matrix, depriving many qualified students of a fair opportunity to secure admission in government and private medical colleges.

    Students Voice Disappointment

Several medical aspirants and parents have expressed frustration, stating that the delay in adding NMC-approved seats has created unnecessary confusion. Many candidates who narrowly missed securing a seat in R3 argue that had these new seats been included on time, their chances of admission would have significantly improved.

Students are now urging the CET Cell and NMC to conduct a special or additional round of counselling to ensure that no MBBS seat goes vacant when there is a high demand for medical education across the state.

    Institutions Affected

The vacant seats are reported across both government and private medical colleges, particularly in institutions that recently received NMC approval for increased intake or new courses. Despite approval, the administrative delay in updating the state’s counselling database prevented the inclusion of these seats during R3.

    Call for Action

Education experts and student associations have called upon authorities to take immediate steps to address the issue. They have urged the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) and the CET Cell Maharashtra to coordinate with the NMC to conduct a stray or special round to fill the vacant seats before the end of the admission cycle.

    Conclusion

With 484 MBBS seats still unoccupied, the situation raises serious concerns over coordination between regulatory and counselling authorities. Students and parents now await an official response from the CET Cell and NMC, hoping that the vacant seats will soon be filled and deserving candidates won’t lose their chance at a medical career.
