All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Guwahati, established in May 2017 under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY), is an Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 26 May 2017, and the institute was formally inaugurated on 14 April 2023 by him.
The institute was created to reduce regional imbalances in healthcare, provide high-quality tertiary care, and develop model teaching patterns in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
AIIMS Guwahati started its first academic session on 12 January 2021 with 50 MBBS students at a temporary campus in Narakasur Hilltop, Guwahati, mentored by AIIMS Bhubaneswar. In March 2022, it shifted to its permanent 189.2-acre campus at Changsari, Kamrup Rural District, with an Institutional Complex, Hospital Complex, Hostels, and Residential facilities.
Currently, AIIMS Guwahati admits 100 MBBS students annually and offers programs in MBBS, B.Sc Nursing, MD/MS, and PhD, along with a 750-bedded hospital serving Assam and the Northeast region.
