MBA Admissions 2026: IIM Mumbai Continues 60% CAT Weightage, Higher Cut-offs Likely Amid Rising Applications

    MBA

Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai has decided to retain a dominant 60% weightage for CAT scores in its MBA admissions process for the 2026–28 batch, reaffirming the institute’s strong emphasis on national-level entrance exam performance. With a steady increase in the number of applicants expected for the upcoming admission cycle, experts believe that CAT cut-offs at IIM Mumbai may rise further.

Formerly known as NITIE Mumbai, IIM Mumbai has quickly gained prominence among top management institutes, attracting a growing pool of high-scoring CAT aspirants from across the country.

CAT Score Remains the Key Shortlisting Factor

As per the admission policy, CAT 2025 performance will carry 60% weightage during the initial shortlisting stage for candidates applying to the flagship MBA programme. The institute will continue to consider overall percentile as well as sectional performance in:

    • Quantitative Ability (QA)

    • Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)

    • Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC)

Candidates failing to meet the minimum sectional and overall cut-offs will not be shortlisted, irrespective of other academic or professional achievements.

Other Parameters in the Selection Process

Apart from CAT scores, IIM Mumbai will assess candidates on multiple parameters to ensure a holistic evaluation. These include:

    • Academic performance in Class 10, Class 12, and graduation

    • Relevant work experience

    • Diversity factors such as academic and gender diversity

    • Performance in the Personal Interview (PI) round

While CAT continues to dominate the shortlisting phase, personal interview performance plays a crucial role in final selection, testing candidates’ managerial aptitude, leadership potential, and clarity of career goals.

    Cut-offs Expected to Rise

Admission experts anticipate that CAT cut-offs for IIM Mumbai may increase for the 2026 intake due to several factors:

    • Rising popularity of IIM Mumbai after its transition from NITIE

    • Strong placement records and industry reputation

    • Increase in CAT test-takers and high-percentile scorers

    • Limited number of seats compared to applicant volume

General category candidates are expected to require very high overall and sectional percentiles to secure an interview call.

    Why IIM Mumbai’s Policy Matters

By retaining a 60% CAT weightage, IIM Mumbai positions itself among IIMs that place maximum importance on entrance exam merit, making it a highly competitive choice for CAT toppers.

For aspirants, this policy sends a clear message:

    • CAT preparation remains non-negotiable

    • Strong academics and work experience add value

    • Interview readiness can be the final differentiator

    What Aspirants Should Do

    • Aim for exceptionally high CAT 2025 percentiles, especially in all sections

    • Ensure consistency in academic records

    • Highlight quality work experience and achievements

    • Prepare rigorously for the Personal Interview round

With competition intensifying, candidates targeting IIM Mumbai will need a balanced combination of exam excellence, profile strength, and interview performance to secure admission.
