IIT Kharagpur is set to diversify its admission process by introducing alternative pathways for its flagship BTech and BS programs from the next academic session, moving beyond the traditional JEE Advanced rank-based system.

According to institute officials, the initiative aims to encourage students with exceptional academic and extracurricular achievements, ensuring that talent across different domains gets an opportunity to join India’s premier engineering institute. However, JEE Advanced will continue to serve as a baseline requirement for eligibility.

Director Prof. Suman Chakraborty confirmed that the IIT Kharagpur Senate has approved the plan in principle. “From the next academic session, we will admit students through alternative routes without affecting the main JEE Advanced admissions. The institute is considering options such as Sports Excellence Admission and Science Olympiad Excellence Admission as criteria for selection,” he said.

He further clarified that a student’s JEE rank will not influence selection under these alternative routes. The move marks a significant shift in IIT Kharagpur’s admission strategy, reflecting a broader vision to recognize diverse forms of excellence beyond exam performance and to nurture well-rounded talent in science and technology.
