OVERVIEW

NLU Assam was established by the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam Act, 2009 as the fourteenth National Law University in the country and is located in Guwahati. The Hon’ble Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court is the Chancellor of the University.

NLU Assam promotes and makes available modern legal education and research facilities to students and scholars drawn from across the country, including the North East, hailing from different socio-economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds. NLU Assam’s Library holds a collection of more than 12,000 thousand titles in the field of law, social science, and allied humanities. Online databases such as Hein Online, Jstor, Lexis Nexis, Manupatra, SCC Online, Westlaw India, DELNET, Cambridge Book Online have also been made available.

National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJAA) was established by the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam Act, 2009 (Act No. XXV of 2009) as the 14 National Law University established in the country and is located in Guwahati, the capital city of Assam. This Act was later amended the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (Amendment) Act, 2011 (Act 2 of 2012), wherein the word ‘School’ was replaced by the word ‘University’. The objectives of the National Law University, Assam are to impart comprehensive legal education and training at all levels to achieve excellence in the legal education; to promote research in all branches of law; to disseminate legal knowledge by organizing lectures, seminars, symposia, workshops, and conferences on contemporary issues of law to promote legal awareness in the communities to achieve social and economic justice and to promote cultural, legal and ethical values with a view to promote and foster the rule of law and the objectives enshrined in the Constitution of India; and to liaise with institutions of higher learning and research in India and abroad.

Admission

NLU Assam Admission 2025

NLU Assam admission 2024 is currently ongoing for LLM and BA+LLB programmes. The university offers admission to students through various entrance exams. It offers admission to courses like BA+LLB, LLM, and PhD. For admission to UG and PG courses at NLU Assam, students must qualify for the CLAT UG and CLAT PG exams. The NLU Assam application process is completely online for UG and PG courses. For CLAT-qualified students, the Consortium of NLUs releases the merit list. Depending on the merit list students can get admission to this university.

National Law University and Judicial Academy Assam admission to PhD courses is based on the entrance exam conducted by the university. Postgraduate students who have qualified for UGC NET/CSIR NET exams are expected to qualify for the NLU Assam PhD entrance exam. Eligible students must submit the NLU Assam PhD application form at the university campus along with a demand draft for paying the application fee. NLU Assam eligibility criteria for PhD courses is to score 55% marks in the post-graduation exam.

 

NLU Assam Admission Process 2025

NLU Assam offers admission to UG, PG, and PhD courses. National Law University and Judicial Academy Assam admission process is online for UG and PG courses while PhD admission process is offline. NLUJAA admission to LLM and BA+LLB is based on CLAT PG and CLAT UG exam scores respectively. For admission through the CLAT exam, students must choose NLU Assam as their first preference during the application process. Students need to provide their entrance exam details for PhD admission during the application process. Below provided is the NLU Assam admission process.

NLUJA Assam Admission Process Online (Through CLAT)

  1. Students first need to visit the Consortium of NLUs website (consortiumofnlus.ac.in).
  2. Now register and create a login ID and password.
  3. Log into the account and then start filling out the NLU Assam application form.
  4. Students need to choose BA+LLB or LLM as subjects.
  5. Provide all the required information and attach relevant documents.
  6. Now students must choose the National Law University and Judicial Academy Assam as their first preference.
  7. Pay the NLU Assam application fee for CLAT.
  8. Submit the application form.
  9. Appear in the CLAT exam.
  10. Now register for the counselling process and check the seat allotment list.
  11. If NLU Assam is allotted to the student then they need to use the freeze option and pay the confirmation fee of Rs 30,000.
  12. The university will contact the student for document verification.
  13. Pay the university admission fee and then the admission will be confirmed.

NLU Assam Admission Process Offline (For PhD)

  1. Go to the NLU Assam official website (nluassam.ac.in).
  2. Click on the PhD admission notification and open the PDF.
  3. Read the instructions and take a printout of the NLU Assam application form for PhD available in the PDF.
  4. Fill out the application form and attach all the supporting documents.
  5. Draw a demand draft to pay the National Law University and Judicial Academy Assam application fee for PhD which is Rs 1000 for the general category and Rs 750 for the reserved categories.
  6. Attach a copy of the demand draft with the application and send it to the registrar before the final submission date.
  7. Now attend the NLU Assam PhD Entrance Exam and then the university will release the list of selected candidates.
  8. If selected, visit the university campus for document verification and pay the Rs 10,000 NLU Assam admission fee to confirm the admission.

NLU Assam: B.A. LL.B (Hons.)

The University offers the B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) Five-Year Integrated Course where under Social Sciences subjects like Economics, English, History, Political Science and Sociology are integrated with the Law subjects in the first two years of study. However, from the third year, the Course Curriculum primarily comprises of Law subjects. All subjects are compulsory in the first three years of study.

NLU Assam B.A. LL.B Admission Process

Admission to this program is purely based on merit determined through a Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) conducted by the 18 participating law schools in rotation

NLU Assam B.A. LLB Honors Eligibility:

A candidate for admission to the B.A, LL.B (Hons.) Degree Course shall have:

B.A. LL.B (Hons.)

  • passed the Higher Secondary School Examination (10+2) system or an examination equivalent thereto securing in the first attempt, not less than 50% (45% in the case of SC/ST candidates and persons with disability) in the aggregate
  • There is no age limit as per the 2017 rules
