SSPU Slips in NIRF Rankings 2025; Cites Faculty Shortage

Symbiosis Skills and Professional University (SSPU), Pune, has slipped in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 rankings, with the institution citing faculty shortages as a key reason for its decline.
While SSPU had made steady progress in the rankings over the past few years, the latest results placed it several positions lower in the University category. The decline has sparked conversations about the critical role of faculty strength and research output in determining NIRF scores.
Faculty Shortage a Major Concern
University officials acknowledged that despite strong academic programs and industry-linked courses, a shortage of qualified faculty has hampered performance in certain parameters, particularly in Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR) and Research and Professional Practice (RP).
A senior SSPU representative said,
“The lack of adequate full-time faculty has been a major hurdle. While we have excellent infrastructure and a strong placement record, research publications and faculty-student ratio remain areas of concern. We are working aggressively to address this.”
NIRF Parameters Affected
The NIRF framework evaluates institutions on five key parameters:
Teaching, Learning, and Resources (30%)
Research and Professional Practice (30%)
Graduation Outcomes (20%)
Outreach and Inclusivity (10%)
Perception (10%)
According to analysts, SSPU’s placements and student diversity remained strong, but weaker scores in faculty strength, PhD output, and funded projects contributed to the slide.
Roadmap for Improvement
The university has announced plans to:
Recruit more PhD-qualified faculty members
Strengthen research collaborations with industries
Encourage faculty and students to publish in reputed journals
Introduce incentives for innovation and patents
Stakeholders Respond
Students and alumni expressed mixed reactions. While many praised SSPU’s focus on skill-based learning and employability, others stressed that long-term reputation depends on consistent research contributions.
Education experts note that SSPU’s case highlights a broader issue faced by newer and private universities in India: balancing rapid expansion with academic depth.
Looking Ahead
Despite the setback, SSPU leadership remains optimistic. “Rankings are important, but what matters most is delivering value to our students and society. We are confident that with our upcoming initiatives, SSPU will reclaim its position in the top tier in the coming years,” the spokesperson added.
